San Juan to the Ceiba Ferry: How to Get to Vieques and Culebra
Heading to Vieques or Culebra? Both islands are reached by ferry from the terminal in Ceiba, on Puerto Rico's east coast, about an hour's drive from San Juan. The trip is easy once you know how it works, and the most common mistake visitors make is running late for the boat. Here is what we tell our own riders.
Where the ferry leaves from
Ferries to Vieques and Culebra depart from the Ceiba terminal at Marina Dr. Roosevelt Roads, Ceiba. It is not in San Juan, so you need a ride across the island. Depending on traffic, plan on roughly an hour from the San Juan airport (SJU) or Isla Verde, and a little more from Old San Juan.
Buying ferry tickets
Tickets are sold through the official Puerto Rico Ferry website (puertoricoferry.com) and the City Experiences app, which also shows schedules, service alerts and a live ferry tracker. Ferry sales are final with no refunds, so double-check your date and time before you pay. Schedules can change, so check the app the day before you travel.
Arrive early
The ferry operator asks passengers to arrive at the terminal one hour before departure, and check-in closes 10 minutes before the boat leaves. If you are flying in the same day, leave yourself a comfortable buffer between landing and your ferry time.
How long is the crossing?
The ferry from Ceiba to Vieques takes about one hour. Bring water, sunscreen and a light jacket for the air-conditioned cabin.
